Affiliated Projects is a collection of designers with a breadth of in-depth experience in innovative architecture, craftsmanship, construction, and publishing. At Affiliated Projects we believe that the best design process – and product – is one that nurtures the curiosity of both our clients and ourselves.  We see clients as collaborators and find great joy in a lively exchange of ideas. We delight in the erosion of preconception, and sharing our perspective.

We measure the success of a design process – and product – by how specifically it has responded to the needs of our client. To achieve this we seek out a shared process where our clients become collaborators.  We have learned through experience that the best projects arise from a lively exchange of ideas.

At Affiliated Projects we believe that design should reward curiosity and that our enjoyment in the experience of the world around us springs from the discovery of the unexpected. We value delight. We don’t believe that good design is something fancy that needs an excessive budget to be made. Good design is an invention that addresses basic problems in an unexpected and delightful way.

Responsibility to the budget and the concerns of the client are at the core of professionalism – and our practice. We take joy in the process of invention – but understand it to be rooted in a solid knowledge of construction processes.  A firm understanding of project constraints often yields the most fertile territory for innovation.  

We believe that every project should be, and can be, a little bit fantastic.

We are design optimists: we believe that communities are made better when people are engaged and we believe that delightful environments both reward and inspire engagement.  As a community, we cannot afford design that is indifferent to the populations it serves.  

We are also level-headed realists: we know that no matter the value of design, budgets do not always accommodate.  We see pro-bono work as an opportunity to straddle this gap.  (We also find the demand for efficiency - to do a lot with a little - to be among the most exciting problems in design.  It flexes our brains.)

We see great value in our ability to produce something of worth out of the intersection of needs, experience, and imagination.
